Nuverta obtains FSSC 22000 certification: a step forward in sustainable and local protein production
Nuverta, Arvesta’s plant-based protein start-up, has obtained the internationally recognized FSSC 22000 certification. This confirms that the production of proteins and starches from locally grown yellow peas meets the highest standards for food safety and process control.

Belgian pea power
Since its founding, Nuverta has been building a Belgian value chain around yellow peas. As a bold pioneer in local plant-based proteins, Nuverta offers “pea-powered” products that are not only healthy and rich in protein and fiber, but also bring key benefits to the food industry. The proteins and starches extracted from yellow peas act as natural and sustainable emulsifiers and dough improvers. They enhance texture, replace eggs or meat, and boost the nutritional value of products — all using locally grown peas, processed in Belgium.
Expanding acreage
The yellow pea acreage in Belgium has grown from 100 to 500 hectares, with the ambition to reach 3,000 hectares by 2030. To supplement volumes, Nuverta collaborates with French farmers, ensuring the local character of the ingredients is preserved.
The strategic choice for yellow peas contributes to a lower ecological footprint. As a nitrogen-fixing crop, peas help reduce nitrogen emissions compared to conventional crops.
“This certification is a major milestone in our growth journey,” says Charlotte Van Tendeloo, Business Development Manager at Nuverta. “It’s the result of teamwork, vision, and strong collaboration with our farming partners. We’re ready to set a new standard in local, sustainable ingredients together with the food industry.”
